What The Symbolism of Chess Means To Me (The Family Unit) A Fundamental Building Block of a Christian Life
Chess is like the Bible in that many centuries ago only Kings and Queens and other elite people had access to them. And now the Bible and Chess are available to most people.
There are about 500 billion different outcomes to the conclusion of a chess game. So shows the diversity of God and the many different paths of a Christian Life.
Here are the pieces on a chess board and the related blessings God has given many of us in life. I myself am not on the chessboard just the blessings (pieces) God has given me.

The King represents Jesus and is the only divine piece on the board. The King is the most important piece on the board and in life. All other pieces should be arranged in support of the King. True fulfillment only comes from Jesus. I have in the past allowed other centers to obscure my Jesus center. |

The queen represents my wife or in her case me her husband. It is the second most important piece on the board and in life. I have spent considerable time in the past without a spouse. |

The pawns represent my children and they are the pieces with the most potential on the board and in life. My pawns in the past have been a sponsored child in India and the Philippines. |

The castle represents my home which is a house although I have spent considerable time in the past in a tent. |

The bishops represent Christian friendship, wisdom, knowledge such as marital advice or Biblical financial advice etc. As iron sharpens iron so one man sharpens another. I also think the bishop can represent ones job, career or vocation. The bishop can take a variety of forms related to the above statement for each individual. |

The knights represent transportation and this can take many forms. |
I’ve heard chess considered to be a war game and I think of when you consider the spiritual warfare I think chess could be symbolic of our battles in life. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Grandmaster Larry Evans signed my chess book “may you win your games at life” and I think battles of life can be placed here to.
There are four Christian songs I think of when I think of chess: You Are My King, Blessed Be Your Name, Thy Word and In Christ Alone. You Are My King states Jesus is my King. Blessed Be Your Name says, “you give and take away and still I will say blessed be your name.” Thy Word says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” In Christ Alone says, “all other ground besides Christ is shifting sand.”
People say that they don’t have time for chess but that just like saying they don’t have time to workout. Chess is a great way to exercise the higher levels of thinking of the mind.
